2012 > Tour

The origin of Hello Taiwan dates back to 2010, when members of the New York Taiwanese American community sensed a disconnect from younger generations interested in music. The idea to bridge the gap was simple: host a rock concert at the Taiwan Center around Thanksgiving, providing the perfect opportunity to blend community, family, and great music.

The inaugural "Hello Taiwan Rocks" concert was a huge success, and featured Taiwanese American talent from all over the East Coast. In 2012, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the community donated proceeds from the concert to the FDNY Foundation. The check was presented at the concert to Mr. Daniel Nigro (FDNY commissioner during 911 and current commissioner under the De Blasio administration). Since then, the concert has donated to those in need.

Over the years, the event evolved even further – the “Hello Taiwan” name was adopted to include genres of music beyond rock, and the Taiwanese Food Bazaar was added, to round out the musical experience with great food.

The influence of the concert continued to grow, and in 2012 Taiwanese bands took to the road for an east coast music tour under then “Hello Taiwan Tour” name. The tour was a major success, allowing the artists to promote their music and Taiwan at the same time. The tour has deep ties with the Passport to Taiwan Festival that takes place on Union Square each year to celebrate Taiwanese American Heritage Week designated by the US Congress in 1999.
